Advancing Transformative Philanthropy
During times of change, nonprofit boards and executive directors benefit from external expertise and skills to advance specific actions: forging a strategic plan, launching a campaign, striving though a leadership transition, engaging new audiences, or a launching new initiative.
Governance & Strategy
Increasingly complex challenges add new demands on the volunteer leaders and staff of nonprofit organizations. During moments of change, I will work with you to create a strategic plan for growth and then work as a member of your team to implement the steps to reach your goals.
Strategic Planning for Growth: Frequently, organizations lack the time and attention necessary to make the intentional shift to serve more people. I will work with your board and staff to define a process to deliver an actionable plan with clear metrics and measurable impact.
Interim/Transition Leadership: Change in leadership is one of the most challenging moments for a nonprofit Board of Directors, often leaving organizations struggling to sustain operations and meeting existing commitments. I can work within the existing team to provide needed continuity and management while also working with the Board as it focuses on finding its next leader.
Board Structure and Governance: Board best practices and governance structures are critical to the long-term success of nonprofits. Working with Board leadership and the executive staff, I help develop a framework that leads to increased Board participation, more efficient use of volunteer time, eases the demands on Executive staff, and leverages a Board’s strength for increased funding.
Transformative Philanthropy
Fundraising is often seen as a uncomfortable burden. Yet creating opportunities for others to participate in your mission is incredibly rewarding. By shaping a story leading to real change and inviting others to join your efforts, we can expand the number of people.
Capital and Capacity Campaign Planning: I will help you develop a deliberate plan to engage donors differently and invite them into your story. I will work as part of your team to develop a comprehensive plan that includes a compelling case for support, establishes clear goals and metrics, identifies lead donors and new funding sources, creates a communications plan and cultivates campaign leadership.
Campaign Implementation: I am available to work alongside your development staff and campaign advisors to identify and cultivate donor prospects, track progress, and ensure you are making the right steps toward reaching your goals while securing long-term sustainable support.
Grant Writing and Major Donor Stewardship: I am able to support your team in identifying and securing new foundation grant funding, as well as cultivate, solicit and maintain individual major gifts.
Interim Development Leadership: During times of transition, I can step in and support your development team maintain continuity, rather than divert team focus and loose fundraising momentum.
Philanthropy & the Public Realm
Cities and towns across America strive to introduce or expand philanthropy into their public systems by establishing park foundations and friends groups.
Philanthropy can be a powerful tool for advancing civic infrastructure likes parks and libraries, but to do it effectively and well, communities need balance between private philanthropic interests and the democratic, public process for their efforts to be effective and sustained.
I work with local communities to develop an effective philanthropic approach that brings additional resources to your park system while honoring existing democratic public institutions and processes. Each community will have a unique set of needs and desires. I work with community leaders to identify seed funding and expand support for your park foundation and establish the agreements that foster a sustainable philanthropic partner for your community’s park system. While each community will have differing needs, my process includes:
Shaping and initiating public/private agreements
Identifying and securing seed and capacity funding
Developing community solutions and funding
Increasing staff capacity
Advocacy and civic engagement
Bringing a new perspective into your community process will help reach agreement faster and with better clarity than when attempted without outside counsel.
